For 3D printing, the going rate of $1.00 per hour to cover the cost of materials will be waived for all print jobs for the forseeable future. Yay!
3D printing (or additive manufacturing), is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file, using additive processes. The object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the form becomes tangible. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object. It can be a very interesting process to watch!
Simplify 3D - This is the software we use to print files you have created yourself, or saved from the internet. While there is staff on hand to help with the basic setup of your print job, we encourage you to educate yourself in Simplify 3D before printing, in order to maximize your printing time. If you'd like an opportunity to use Simplify 3D without printing, the Makerspace workstation can be booked - and from there you can tinker with settings, sizes, and preview your job.

3D Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2 + FlashForge Dual Extruder
The UTSC Library Makerspace hosts 2x the MakerBot Replicator 2, (the parent of the MakerBot Replicator 2x). The Replicator 2 has many of the same functions as the 2x, but the main difference is that the Replicator 2 feeds only one colour of filament while printing at a time. It's best used for creating models, quick protoyles, and short-run production applications. If you are looking to print with two colours of filament at a time, please book the Creator PRO FlashForge Dual Extruder. Note - the FlashForge is best for people who already have some 3D printing experience.
PLA Filament: Multiple Colours
The filament used for 3D printing in the Makerspace is called PLA (polylactic acid). It is a non-toxic, renewable, and biodegradable resource that is commonly used when manufacturing plastic water bottles. It will naturally degrade when exposed to the environment, so please keep this in mind when creating prints that will have exposure to sun, water, or edibles. You can paint on top of this filament, and you can also print an item made up of multiple pieces in different colours for assembly. Note - we have now introduced ABS filament, which can be used exclusively with our Creator PRO FlashForge Dual Extruder.
3D Scanner: MakerBot Digitizer
Make use of this cutting-edge technology! 3D scanners turn tangible objects into 3D models that you can modify and 3D print. The UTSC Library houses the MakerBot Digitizer, optimized to work seamlessly with the MakerBot Replicator 2x; however, the standard design files it creates can be used on any 3D printer of your choice. The Digitizer outputs standard 3D file formats so that you can shape, mold, twist, animate, improve, and transform objects in a third-party 3D modeling program.
