Science Literacy Week & Makerspace Open Doors Event

I heart science

Join us for a combined Science Literacy Week & Makerspace Open Doors Event @ UTSC!

Science Literacy Week is a week-long celebration of science in Canada and this year, it runs from September 18th - 24th.

We're combining it with open access to our #UTSCMakerspace, where there will be technology demonstrations, #3Dprinting, a Makerspace Orientation Blitz, and more!

Monday, Sept. 18th

  • Solar Monday: 1pm-3pm in the UTSC Library Makerspace
Come by and check out Professor Hanno’s creation as it 3D prints on our 3D printers and meet your peers in the Makerspace before going on the solar walk @ 3ppm

  • Solar Studies and Youth Literature: 4pm-4:30pm in the UTSC Library Makerspace
How is it that, given the vastness of space, we have an opportunity to see two solar eclipses within such a short time? How could they align so perfectly when space is so immense? Perhaps the answer lies in the broad reach of light waves. Join Amy Parker in a discussion on how we can understand eclipses using diagrams and light sources involving rotating moons about a planet and sun, and how books can reflect this popular summer phenomena.

Tuesday, Sept. 19th

  • Spot the Logical Fallacy: 11am-1pm in front of the UTSC Library
See if you can identify errors in logic as presented in popular newspaper articles! This display is hosted by the UTSC Sustainability Office.

  •  Maker Tuesday: 11am-1:30pm in the UTSC Library Makerspace
Check out our new Makerspace technology to learn about 3D printing, 3D scanning, Arduino, virtual reality, the DoBot Robotic Arm, and more! Want to proclaim your love of science to the world? Try out our button maker! We have pre-printed templates or you can create your own!

Wednesday, Sept. 20th

  • Maker Wednesday: 2pm-4:30pm in the UTSC Library Makerspace
Check out our new Makerspace technology to learn about 3D printing, 3D scanning, Arduino, virtual reality, the DoBot Robotic Arm, and more! Want to proclaim your love of science to the world? Try out our button maker! We have pre-printed templates or you can create your own!

  • Fieldwork Fails: 5-6:30 pm in the UTSC Library Makerspace
A panel and open mic event for researchers to relay their humorous/treacherous mishaps from the field. Bring your own stories to tell and come prepared with questions to ask about fieldwork!

Thursday, Sept. 21st

  • Scientific Communication & Engagement: 1pm-1:30pm in the UTSC Library Makerspace
"You don't really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother" - Albert Einstein. How should researchers approach sharing scientific knowledge with the public? Join Dr. Diana Valencia from the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences for a discussion around scientific communication and engagement.

  • History of Extraterrestrial Life Debate: 5pm-6pm in the UTSC Library Makerspace
