Equipment

Bookable Equipment:

Cost:
Use of the room and all of its equipment is FREE!

For 3D printing, the going rate of $1.00 per hour to cover the cost of materials will be waived for all print jobs for the forseeable future. Yay!

3D Printing:
3D printing (or additive manufacturing), is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file, using additive processes. The object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the form becomes tangible. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-section of the eventual object. It can be a very interesting process to watch!

MakerBot Desktop Software - Download this free software to your device and use it to open the .stl / .obj files you have created yourself, or saved from the internet. From there you can tinker with settings, sizes, and preview your job - the only thing you won't be able to do from home is press "Print". Then come in to use the 3D printer all ready to go and maximize your printing time!

3D Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2
The UTSC Library Makerspace hosts two 3D printers for booking, each being a MakerBot Replicator 2, (the parent of the MakerBot Replicator 2x). The Replicator 2 has many of the same functions as the 2x, but the main difference is that the Replicator 2 feeds only one colour of filament while printing at a time. It's best used for creating models, quick protoyles, and short-run production applications.

PLA Filament: Multiple Colours
The filament used for 3D printing in the Makerspace is called PLA (polylactic acid). It is a non-toxic, renewable, and biodegradable resource that is commonly used when manufacturing plastic water bottles. It will naturally degrade when exposed to the environment, so please keep this in mind when creating prints that will have exposure to sun, water, or edibles. You can paint on top of this filament, and you can also print an item made up of multiple pieces in different colours for assembly.

3D Scanner: MakerBot Digitizer
Make use of this cutting-edge technology! 3D scanners turn tangible objects into 3D models that you can modify and 3D print. The UTSC Library houses the MakerBot Digitizer, optimized to work seamlessly with the MakerBot Replicator 2x; however, the standard design files it creates can be used on any 3D printer of your choice. The Digitizer outputs standard 3D file formats so that you can shape, mold, twist, animate, improve, and transform objects in a third-party 3D modeling program.
