The UTSC Library is a leader in academic library service and program development. The library supports research and study by housing an extensive network of scholarly materials in many formats. The library offers an extensive reference and research service and holds a local collection of about 400,000 print items, journal subscriptions, sound recordings, videos and films, a leisure reading collection, special research and archival collections. This position will collaborate extensively with various Library units in offering innovative and comprehensive solutions for a variety of Library initiatives. Our core mission is to support the learning, teaching and research needs of all UTSC undergraduate and graduate programs.

Reporting to the Research & Digital Initiatives Librarian, your role as Data & Digital Collections Developer is responsible for contributing to and creating special digital collections for the U of T Scarborough Library as part of the Digital Scholarship Team. The goal of this work is to support cleaning and organizing data and media assets and loading them into our Islandora-based repository infrastructure, working closely with the programmers and our systems administrator to streamline, document, test, and execute project work in support of the library’s goals.

Responsibilities

  • Identifying and analyzing data and metadata discrepancies and developing strategies as necessary to correct errors.
  • Executing and refining workflows for the creation of files and file packages (including .zip and .csv files) and uploading them to the server and Islandora platform.
  • Executing and refining workflows to transcode media files to target profiles.
  • Configuring a content management system and maintaining information on digital platforms (including creating and editing web and wiki pages).
  • Collaborating on additional workflows and local toolsets to improve efficiency in this area, including testing new features.
  • Providing quality assurance support for new feature development and system upgrades.

Essential Qualifications

  • Evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
  • Experience using one or more programming languages such as Bash or Python.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and comfort with technology (including spreadsheet programs like Excel, Google Sheets).
  • Education & Certification: post-secondary degree in areas such as application development/computer science, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and ideally experience with content management systems such as Drupal/Islandora.
  • Experience working with open-source software and communities (experience working closely with software developers and systems administrators).
  • Knowledge of and ideally experience with quality assurance processes.
  • Knowledge of and ideally experience with GitHub/GitLab.
