Students from other universities

Dear Scarby, why do so many non-U of T students come and take up precious study space?  - Seat Seeker 3rd year

Dear Seeker, This question comes up more often than you may think. After investigating, I found out that the library is publicly funded and the library resources should be available to the public to benefit the community. The library does have some rules in place that limit public access. For example, non-U of T students don’t have Wi-Fi access, they have to get a guest account to use computers in the library, and they can only use a few computers next to the front entrance. If non-U of T students are being disruptive, they can be asked to leave. If the library is full at any time, and students can’t find a place to study, members of the general public can be asked to leave. U of T students are the library's priority!

Unique titles

Dear Scarby, what is the most unique or weird book title you have come across in the library?  - Purple Girl, 4th year

Dear Purple Girl, If you look through some of the thousands of books in the UTSC library collection, you are sure to find a few funny titles! Here are my favourites: The Cheese Monkeys: A Novel in Two Semesters - like, where are the cheese hedgehogs, is what I wonder! Modern Skeletons in Postmodern Closets: A Cultural Studies Alternative - spoooky! Grammar Wars: Language as Cultural Battlefield in 17th and 18th Century England - Really? They had to argue over it like that? Why didn't they look it up on the Internet?! On Bulls--t - Yup, that’s a title! Haven’t seen it on a UTSC syllabus yet though.... Who Owns English? – Hey, don't we all?

Entering the library

What do I need to enter the library? Do I need to show my TCard and UCheck? Do I need to book a seat? - UTSC student newbie, second year

Dear newbie,

U of T students can just walk in! No need to book a seat or show UCheck and TCard at the desk anymore. Best to have your TCard on you, though--you can be asked for it while on campus.

Yours truly,

Scarby H. Hedgehog

Assignment planner

Dear Scarby, Help! I have so many assignments this semester and I don’t how to keep on track with them all!  - Buried in Assignments, 3rd year

Dear Buried, I know keeping track of all your assignments can be difficult, but don’t worry because I have a great tool that can help you. Allow me to introduce you to my little friend called the Assignment Planner! I think you two would be a perfect match. It breaks down all the different steps of your assignments for you and then gives you a time plan that you can follow. All you have to do is enter the dates you want to start and finish your assignment and what kind of assignment it is and voila!, you get a detailed plan that will help you keep track of your assignment!

Is the library hiring?

Dear Scarby, Working at the library looks like fun! I'd really like to spend time hanging out with you and the librarians, and helping other students find their way around the library. Do you have any openings right now? - Friendly Bookworm, 2nd year

Hi Friendly,

The library is a great place to work for sure! If you dream of being a part-time "SHHH-er" you could apply to become a Student Library Assistant (SLA). SLAs provide service to library patrons (for example by helping them find library materials and use library equipment), they help maintain the library collection, and many other tasks. Check the website for job openings and for info on how to be a volunteer Library Society Ambassador. You can find work study and other campus jobs on CLNx.
