Join archivists from the University of Toronto Archives and Records Management Services (UTARMS) for an introductory session on archival research. Learn practical skills that can be applied across campus archives and beyond, helping you build a strong foundation for your academic journey. Whether you're completely new to archives or curious to learn more about the unique (and sometimes mysterious!) tools and techniques of archival research, this session is designed to help you feel ready to explore.
What? Attendees will:
- Be introduced to the basics of archival terminology and theory
- Learn how to locate primary source material that is relevant to your research
- Discover how to navigate archival descriptions, such as finding aids
- Gain hands-on experience with materials from UTARMS
Why? This session is designed to help graduate students:
- Learn about archives and their value in conducting original research
- Become familiar with the archival landscape on campus and beyond
- Gain confidence in starting research in an archives
- Deepen their research skills to expand avenues of inquiry
Who? Graduate students who are new to archival research or who want to develop their knowledge and skills. (Interested undergraduate students or staff may also attend, but please note that the session is designed to meet graduate research needs.)
When? Thursday, December 4, 2025, 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm
- This event will start promptly at 5:00 pm. Attendees will be asked to place jackets and bags in a provided locker before proceeding to the MacLean Hunter Room, so please plan to arrive a few minutes early.
Where? MacLean Hunter Room, Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library (120 St. George Street)
- The Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library can be accessed via the revolving doors at the top of the stairs located on St. George at Harbord.
- Alternatively, attendees may enter through Robarts' main accessible entrance at 130 St. George, then follow signs for the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library.
- Accessibility Note: Wheelchair users are asked to contact us in advance, as wheelchair access to the MacLean Hunter Room requires use of a staff elevator.
