Location The BRIDGE, UTSC

Time -
  • What: Learn to clean unstructured spreadsheets quickly to make the most of your data. This workshop will quickly allow you to aggregate many cells into one, transpose data from columns to rows, and more.

  • Why: Having data is great. Knowing how to maximize the use of your data is better. In order to get the most of your data, you will need to harness Tidy Data pracitces. OpenRefine will assist in formatting and removing the inconsistencies in your data to improve your data visualizations and reports.

  • Software: In this workshop, we will be using OpenRefine, a free, open-source Java application that uses your web browser as a graphical interface. It is described as “a power tool for working with messy data” (David Huynh). You can get OpenRefine at https://openrefine.org/download.html for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  • Who: This workshop is designed for individuals interested in understanding data cleaning practices: Humanities, Business, or Sciences. An understanding of spreadsheets would be helpful for this workshop.

  • How: This is a 2 hour in-person workshop, consisting of a short lecture and then a series of demonstrations, which you can follow along with or just watch, interspersed with activities we will complete together and discuss. There are no breaks.

  • Where: This workshop will be held in The BRIDGE Data Lab

  • When: Friday, January 31, 3-5:00pm.
