Makerspace Access & Policies

The UTSC Library Makerspace is available to UTSC staff, faculty, and students. To gain access to the Makerspace and its equipment, an Introductory Orientation session on the features of the space must first be attended. Once certified, access is granted via the user's TCard during the hours the Makerspace is open.

Equipment does not have be booked to be inside of othe Makerspace; however, please note that the space is not a group or individual study space - it is intended for collaborative work relating to what the room has to offer.

Makerspace Introductory Orientations take place inside of the library, in AC286A - the Library Instruction Lab. Sign up for the sessions via the UTSC Intranet:

1) Log into the Intranet with a UTORid and password
2) From the Home page, under ‘Sign up | RSVP Events’ use the search box to type “Makerspace”
3) Choose the desired orientation date and time, and click on it
4) Click on the green "Sign Up" button to reserve a spot

24 hours after a Makerspace Introductory Orientation has been completed, users will be able to book Makerspace equipment online via the UTSC Intranet:

1) Log into the Intranet with a UTORid and password
2) From the Home page, under Quick Links select "Makerspace Resources"
3) Click on "book" under the desired equipment, during the desired timeslot

 

Should a booking need to be cancelled, please log into the Intranet and delete it. The "no-show" policy is in effect for missed bookings.

Bookings are held for 15 minutes; afterwhich, are declared a "no-show" and will be deleted to allow other students access to the equipment. If running late, please call the Makerspace at 416-287-7486 to alert staff not to delete a booking, or email the Makerspace at makerspace@utsc.utoronto.ca.

Be advised that after three no-shows by one user, Makerspace privileges will be revoked. To regain privileges, reattendance at a Makerspace Introductory Orientation is mandatory.
 

The equipment in the Makerspace is booked individually, and multiple items are allowed to be booked at one time (for example, the workstation as well as an Arduino kit), with the exception of the 3D printers; access to only one 3D printer at a time is permitted. Bookings are a maximum of 3 hours per day per booking, with the exception of overnight printing: for overnights, please book at minimum the last hour of the day.

Rather than booking via the Intranet, the Arduino & Raspberry Pi kits, Lego & Playdough sets, and Media equipment get signed out via a TCard and can be taken home.

 

Rules of Conduct:
1) The space is intended for creative, collaborative work - it is not a typical study space
2) Snacks and drinks with closed lids are allowed - no aromatic or messy foods, please
3) While collaboration is encouraged, noise must remain at normal levels so as not to disturb others

3D Printing Safety Rules:
It's important to remember that the 3D printer generates high temperatures and includes moving parts that could cause injury. Do not reach into the printer while it is in operation. A few other things to keep in mind while 3D printing:

1) Tie back long hair / secure any hanging jewlery
2) Tuck in loose clothing / roll up sleeves
3) Do not touch the extruder nozzle - it is very hot
4) When removing your object from the build plate, aim the scraping tool away from you

3D Printing Policies:
1) It is mandatory to remain present during your entire print job
2) The print job must not exceed the time booked (3 hrs max)
3) To book an overnight, users must book (at least) the last hour of the day and remain present until close
4) The creation of any weapons, explosives, obscene materials or any other materials that may be dangerous or offensive to others is strictly prohibited

Intellectual Property:
Intellectual property laws in Canada govern the reproduction of material. When it comes to 3D printing, it's important to be aware of what can and cannot legally be reproduced.
