The Emerging Professionals program provides employment to undergraduate and graduate students, including full-time co-op positions and short-term practicum placements. This program has benefitted from partnerships with Faculty research project funds and the Young Canada Works in Summer jobs programs.
From 2020-23, the Emerging Professionals program spent $621,257 (including grants and subsidies) on 74 positions, contributing 25,011 hours of capacity to library and Faculty projects.
Program Goals
Improving workflows related to student employment to maximize a sense of community and mutual benefit.
Creating meaningful part-time and full-time employment opportunities for students at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as recently graduated professionals.
Partnering with students to add capacity for faculty and librarian research, scholarship, and other projects, ensuring alignment with student’s personal and professional interests.
Drawing matching funding from internal and external granting programs such as work-study and Young Canada Works as well as Faculty research funds to maximize the impact of library-provided funding to achieve the goals above.
Activities
Students help with public service, interact with library users, and learn about how the academic library works (how we get our books, journals, and other resources onto our shelves and how our users find them). Students can also assist with the organization of library events and programming (among other tasks)
