The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) Library stands in solidarity with the Asian community against anti-Asian racism. UTSC staff and librarians have assembled an initial list of resources that aims to celebrate Asian voices, educate on anti-Asian racism and history in Canada, and provide resources on eliminating racism in our lifetime.
To support the continued celebration of Black excellence, we’ve put together a broad list of books and resources to keep Black voices at the centre of our conversations and learning well-beyond Black History Month in February.
Celebrating Canadian Islamic History
UTSC staff and librarians have assembled a list of resources that aims to celebrate Muslim contributions in Canada and to educate on Islamophobia.
On January 19, 2023, the Office of the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean with the UTSC Library in collaboration with University of Toronto Press (UTP), hosted the Celebration of Book Authors, featuring UTSC faculty, librarians and staff who authored or edited a book since 2020.
Joining libraries and other GLAM organizations across Canada this Climate Action Week, the University of Toronto Scarborough Library presents a collection of resources that focus on climate change related challenges, and sustainability and climate justice efforts. This collection aims to raise awareness, answer our communities’ growing needs, and articulate clearly that libraries are places to connect people and access resources on climate change.
A priority of UTSC’s 2020-25 Strategic Plan, Inspiring Inclusive Excellence, is to ensure that the campus’s commitment to inclusion, Indigeneity, and anti-racism is reflected across programs and embedded in our pedagogical approaches and supports. A working circle was established in the Fall of 2020 to lead a campus-wide curriculum review in order to assess our current standing against those goals and to inform a plan for action.
Hispanic and Latin Heritage Month
During the Month of October, we recognize Hispanic Heritage Month in Ontario and Latin American Heritage Month in Canada. In the United States, National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually between September 15 – October 15.
Inspiring Inclusive Excellence
Inspiring inclusive excellence means embracing and promoting the enriching contributions that come from the diverse backgrounds, ways of knowing, ideas, perspectives, and experiences represented in our community. To support further research of contributions that come from diverse backgrounds and ways of knowing, UTSC librarians and staff have assembled an ongoing list of resources under an expanding list of categories.
World Mental Health Day (during the month of October) and Mental Health Week (during the month of May), serve as vital reminders of the importance of mental well-being in our community. Health promotion commemorations such as these help to break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues and promote open conversations about mental health care. This list was curated to offer insights into mental health advocacy and research. This collection aims to enlighten, educate, and empower individuals to foster a more understanding and supportive environment for all.
September 30th is recognized in Canada as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day of remembrance and contemplation was established by the federal government in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action #80. September 30 coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which remembers the story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, a former residential school student who had her orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school.
