Outlets

Dear Scarby, Can we have more power outlets in the library? - Underpowered

Dear Underpowered,

The library added 40 more outlets in the past year, for a total of over 300 outlets in the computer areas, study carrels, lounge seating, and group study rooms. If you need to charge your phone, you can get a cable and battery pack in the course reserves section. The best news is that the library is under renovation and is planning to add many, many more outlets by 2023.

Yours truly,

Scarby H. Hedgehog

Drop box

Dear Scarby, Where is the drop box? - Overloaded Backpack

Hi Backpack,

You're in luck! There are actually two drop boxes. One, that you can use when the library is open, is located just inside the library doors; and one that you can use anytime--even when the library is closed--in the hall just outside the library doors. You can return books or other materials from any library in the U of T system.

Yours truly,

L O V E

Dear Scarby, Will I ever find love? - Lonely in the Library

Dear Lonely, If your life is anything like in the rom-coms, you'll encounter your future love interest via a "meet cute." That's when two people who become a romantic couple meet for the first time when they least expect it, like at the grocery store or even in the library. You might bump into that someone special next week, or it might even be someone you've known for a while. Only time will tell. Scarby hopes it will be soon.

Yours truly,

Scarby H. Hedgehog

How long at a computer

Dear Scarby, How long can we use the library computers, and do we need to reserve computer time? - Carl, 1st year

Dear Carl, You can use the computers as long as you need to, when the library is open, and you don't need to reserve them. If you have to leave for a few minutes to take a break away, don't leave your things unattended and keep in mind that the computers automatically log off and erase any unsaved work after being idle for 30 minutes. Can't find an available computer? Try the computer labs on BV 4th floor--one of them is open 24 hours!

Food and drink

Dear Scarby, It's really annoying that people eat smelly food in the library. I thought that wasn't even allowed. - Cool Dude

Dear Cool Dude, Nothing bugs a library hedghog more than someone eating smelly, messy food! Snacks that don't disturb others and drinks in spill proof containers are okay though.

Directions

Dear Scarby, How do I get to the UTSC Library? Which bus route should I take? Or if I drive can I park near the library?  - Riding or Driving

Dear Riding,

You can take a bus, drive a car, ride a bike or walk in--get directions here. The bus loop is near the library, there are bike racks available, and the closest paid parking is in Parking Lot A.

Here's a campus map to help you find your way around. Look for me in the library, in building AC.

Alumni use

Dear Scarby, I am a fourth year student at UTSC and I was just wondering how much access alumni have to research materials provided by the U of T Library system? - Graduating Soon, 4th year

Dear Graduating,

Congrats on having come so far in your studies! There’s actually several ways alumni can continue to use the library.  If you want to be able to borrow books, you can buy an alumni reader card or alumni research reader card at Reader Registration at Robarts Library.  If you need to use an ebook or journal database, you could do that for free at one of the public computers: ask for a guest account at the Information and Reference Desk at UTSC, or at a LIRA terminal at a library on the St George campus.  You can also buy a guest print card if you need to do some printing.

So glad I’ll still be seeing you around!

Yours truly,

Scarby H. Hedgehog
