How long at a computer

Dear Scarby, How long can we use the library computers, and do we need to reserve computer time? - Carl, 1st year

Dear Carl, You can use the computers as long as you need to, when the library is open, and you don't need to reserve them. If you have to leave for a few minutes to take a break away, don't leave your things unattended and keep in mind that the computers automatically log off and erase any unsaved work after being idle for 30 minutes. Can't find an available computer? Try the computer labs on BV 4th floor--one of them is open 24 hours!

Food and drink

Dear Scarby, It's really annoying that people eat smelly food in the library. I thought that wasn't even allowed. - Cool Dude

Dear Cool Dude, Nothing bugs a library hedghog more than someone eating smelly, messy food! Snacks that don't disturb others and drinks in spill proof containers are okay though.

Directions

Dear Scarby, How do I get to the UTSC Library? Which bus route should I take? Or if I drive can I park near the library?  - Riding or Driving

Dear Riding,

You can take a bus, drive a car, ride a bike or walk in--get directions here. The bus loop is near the library, there are bike racks available, and the closest paid parking is in Parking Lot A.

Here's a campus map to help you find your way around. Look for me in the library, in building AC.

Yes, the library is open to members of the public. You won't be able to borrow books but you're welcome to use the space.

Alumni use

Dear Scarby, I am a fourth year student at UTSC and I was just wondering how much access alumni have to research materials provided by the U of T Library system? - Graduating Soon, 4th year

Dear Graduating,

Congrats on having come so far in your studies! There’s actually several ways alumni can continue to use the library.  If you want to be able to borrow books, you can buy an alumni reader card or alumni research reader card at Reader Registration at Robarts Library.  If you need to use an ebook or journal database, you could do that for free at one of the public computers: ask for a guest account at the Information and Reference Desk at UTSC, or at a LIRA terminal at a library on the St George campus.  You can also buy a guest print card if you need to do some printing.

So glad I’ll still be seeing you around!

Getting help

Dear Scarby, My grades are lower than I hoped. What can I do, and can anyone help me?  - Struggling, 1st year

Dear Struggling,

I totally relate! When I first got to UTSC it was a lot to handle. Try exploring the supports available at UTSC. Here are a few people that helped me:  UTSC library Information and Reference desk or your liaison librarian for research help for papers ; The Writing Center for hands-on writing support––you can even ask their advice at the planning stage ; professor’s office hours––profs and TA’s are usually really helpful if you ask them ; Academic Advising & Career Center (AA&CC)––they have study skills workshops on note taking, reading, time management, and much more! ; and for me, personally, sometimes I just need a sympathetic ear––check out the Health & Wellness Centre!

Lost and found

Dear Scarby, Where is my water bottle?  - Thirsty, 1st year

Dear Thirsty,

Sadly, things are lost in the library every day! The best place to start looking for your water bottle and anything else lost while at the library would be the Information and Reference Desk. You can ask one of the library staff if your item has been turned in. If it's not there my next advice would be to check the campus lost and found operated by Campus Safety Office in SW304. If you lose a TCard then visit the TCard Office.

Good luck!

Students from other universities

Dear Scarby, why do so many non-U of T students come and take up precious study space?  - Seat Seeker 3rd year

Dear Seeker, This question comes up more often than you may think. After investigating, I found out that the library is publicly funded and the library resources should be available to the public to benefit the community. The library does have some rules in place that limit public access. For example, non-U of T students don’t have Wi-Fi access, they have to get a guest account to use computers in the library, and they can only use a few computers next to the front entrance. If non-U of T students are being disruptive, they can be asked to leave. If the library is full at any time, and students can’t find a place to study, members of the general public can be asked to leave. U of T students are the library's priority!

Unique titles

Dear Scarby, what is the most unique or weird book title you have come across in the library?  - Purple Girl, 4th year

Dear Purple Girl, If you look through some of the thousands of books in the UTSC library collection, you are sure to find a few funny titles! Here are my favourites: The Cheese Monkeys: A Novel in Two Semesters - like, where are the cheese hedgehogs, is what I wonder! Modern Skeletons in Postmodern Closets: A Cultural Studies Alternative - spoooky! Grammar Wars: Language as Cultural Battlefield in 17th and 18th Century England - Really? They had to argue over it like that? Why didn't they look it up on the Internet?! On Bulls--t - Yup, that’s a title! Haven’t seen it on a UTSC syllabus yet though.... Who Owns English? – Hey, don't we all?
